Technology Transfer process at UWE

If you have created something during the course of your research which could have commercial potential you should contact Andrew Wilson as soon as practicably possible. (Email andrew2.wilson@uwe.ac.uk Telephone 0117 3283698).

The Technology Transfer Team will arrange a meeting with you to discuss the innovation and complete a full disclosure. This is required to gather all the relevant information to enable us to undertake the necessary due diligence and develop an appropriate protection and exploitation strategy.

Where applicable we may seek to protect UWE owned technologies and innovations by seeking appropriate protection (e.g. by filing a patent application) and will work closely with the research team to commercialise the technology, for example through technology licensing or spin-out company creation.

In order to assist in obtaining optimal protection for the IPR related to the technology it is advisable to disclose any invention to us as early as possible together with details of any intention to make work related to the invention publicly available for example in a poster, paper, abstract, lecture or meeting. The filing of a patent application may not necessarily lead to a delay in publication, although in certain cases it may be desirable to maintain confidentiality for a limited period to help to enable optimal patent protection to be achieved.

Commercialisation routes

Licensing

Innovations developed at UWE can be licensed to external businesses, companies or organisations. In consideration of this UWE would expect a share of the economic benefit provided by the innovation and its associated Intellectual Property Rights. Where appropriate, income from exploitation will be distributed in accordance with the University’s Intellectual Property Policy.

Spin-out company

In certain cases a spin-out company may be an appropriate vehicle for the exploitation of UWE intellectual property. For example if the technology has a range of applications and there is no existing company who are able to develop the technology and bring it to market. The Technology Transfer Team will be able to provide further details.
