Case Study: The Fine Print Research Centre, Bristol School of Art, Media and Design
Sharing Expertise in Colour and Process
Since 1999 UWE's Fine Print Research Centre has worked with Hewlett Packard Research Laboratories on projects including ‘Art and Science with Schools', colour lightfast testing of high end artist's paper, and colour science seminars with delegates from Europe and the USA. Named as one of only eight members in the worldwide Hewlett Packard 2004 round of Art and Science Philanthropy funding, the Centre works with the National Gallery, London, the Louvre, Paris, Prado Madrid and Alinari in Florence, exploring colour printing and high quality image reproduction.
The Centre has completed two successful SME Knowledge Transfer Partnership schemes, one of which won the 2003 DTI prize for the Best Transfer of Knowledge from a University to a Company.
Out-reach includes the @rt Exchange Initiative which created secure on-line opportunities for children from SW England, Nice in southern France, and the children's museum in Galway for production of artworks through remote digital image and traditional print processes. The company has recently supported the appointment of the Hewlett Packard Chair of Fine Print and the appointment of Professor Stephen Hoskins.
