Innovative workshops and courses for the South West

UWE has successfully bid for funding from Universities South West to develop a range of innovative workshops and courses focusing on low carbon technologies and industries. Developed in partnership with the low carbon sector, these are intended to directly address skills gaps in the South West region. They will be piloted in February and March 2011. Bookings can be made by following individual course links below.


Waste to Energy
Identify opportunities to convert waste streams to energy, build your business case and implement solutions.

Delivery and date: Initial one day workshop at UWE’s Frenchay Campus on 15 February 2011, followed by a further three days to include site visits to conduct waste audits. These will be on 16 February 2011, 2 March 2011 and 15 March 2011.


Here to Learn Workshops: Collaborating to decarbonise construction in the South West
This course will provide a better understanding of ‘whole life carbon’ and enable attendees to develop a business case for lower carbon buildings.

Delivery and date: Three half day workshops to be held on 26 January 2011, 23 February 2011 and 16 March 2011 at UWE’s Frenchay Campus.


Lean Process Improvement in High Technology Low Carbon Sectors
Learn how to structure, initiate and participate in organisational change programmes using tools and techniques to provide a robust and sustainable business process improvement programme for the future.

Delivery and date: Two workshops on 8 March 2011 and 29 March 2011, both at UWE’s Frenchay Campus.


Low Carbon Commercial Design
Gain an in-depth understanding of how to design low carbon commercial buildings.

Delivery and date: One day workshop to be held on 9 March 2011 at UWE’s Frenchay Campus.


Low Carbon Retrofit of Historic Buildings
Gain an understanding of policy and fiscal incentives for retrofitting pre-1910 buildings and the practical techniques involved.

Delivery and date: One day workshop to be held on 1 March 2011 at UWE’s Frenchay Campus.


Composite Engineering
Understand how composite engineering is undergoing rapid growth as companies optimise on engineering structures and seek to reduce carbon footprints through the development of light weight sustainable materials.

Delivery and date: E-learning and workshops. E-learning available from 15 February 2011 with practical workshops being held on 15 and 16 March at Yeovil College, Yeovil.


Environmental Legal Changes for Marine and Coastal Developments for Commercial Users
This course will provide an understanding of the legal framework associated with the sea for wind and tidal energy developers and others.

Delivery and date: One day workshop on 5th April 2011 at UWE’s Frenchay Campus.


Design for Automated Deposition of Composites
Understand how to design composite structures with automated production in mind.

Delivery and date: One day workshop on 24 March 2011 at GKN, Filton, Bristol.


Attendees to any of these courses and workshops from the following low carbon sectors may attend free*, subject to availability of places:

  • Marine renewable energy - wind, wave and tidal
  • Non-marine renewable energy
  • Low carbon manufacturing
  • Sustainable construction

*Please note: a fee of £25 will be charged if you book a place on a course and fail to attend it or cancel your place. This will cover associated administration and catering costs.
