Copyright
Copyright subsists in a wide range of ‘works’ including literature, films, photographs, paintings, drawings, computer software, sound recordings and web pages and provides the creator (or owner) with economic rights which enable them to control use of their material by other parties. Copyright only protects the ‘physical’ form of the work and not the ideas behind it. Copyright in a work normally lasts for 70 years after the death of the creator.
Copyright is an automatic right and does not need to be applied for. The use of the copyright symbol © followed by the owner and year is recommended an all documents e.g. © University of the West of England, Bristol 2008. This is useful as it identifies the owner of the work so that someone wishing to use it can seek an appropriate licence to do so, it may also assist in potential infringement cases.
