Researcher Skills Development

Research students on the UWE GradSchool at Buckland Hall grappling with a tricky problemAt UWE, Bristol we are committed to supporting the development of postgraduate research students throughout their research degree programmes, from admission through to final examination. An important part of this is the expectation that UWE research students engage in skills development activities that are offered by Faculties/Schools and by Research, Business & Innovation.

The UK Research Councils have set out a range of skills and abilities that they expect all research students to demonstrate by the time they complete their studies, not just to enhance their degree programme, but also to improve their employability, regardless of their career path. These can be found in the RCUK Joint Statement on Skills

In addition to the research skills development opportunities offered by individual Faculties/Schools, Research, Business & Innovation offer a broad programme of events running throughout the year that address generic skills, for example

  • Becoming a confident presenter
  • The Effective Researcher – project management and supervisor relationship
  • Getting Published: Strategies for successful researchers
  • First steps to small group teaching
  • How to Be a Good Researcher: An Introduction to Research Ethics
  • Managing Working Relationships
  • The Research Conference Survival Guide
  • How to win funds and influence people
  • Hands on training in the Microsoft IT software suite
  • Personal Skills Development Residential Course
  • The Route to Research Degree Success
  • Writing Up Your Thesis

The courses featured above are run by RBI and the Learning and Development Centre.

Personal Skills Development Residential Grad School

UWE’s pioneering ‘Graduate School’ Residential Course for research students, based on the model developed by the Research Councils, is now in its sixth year. In fact the course was the first one in the South West region to be recognised by UK GRAD as fulfilling the requirements of Research Council funding.Course managers for the 2008 GradSchool, Dr Tracey Stead (Bath University) and Dr Paul Spencer (RBI, UWE)

Buckland HallThe Residential Course is a unique opportunity to assess your personal transferable skills, identify your strengths and areas for development and to allow you to experience some of the techniques and processes that enable skills to be used effectively when working in teams. The fully residential course with participants both from UWE and many other Universities was held at the Buckland Hall Conference and Retreat Centre, Bwlch, Nr Brecon, Powys, in May 2008.

Quotes from past residential participants:

"Overall, absolutely excellent. Great food, perfect venue, inspiring tutors and above all talented people doing PhDs. Main thing that I will take away is a new sense of my advanced skills in many areas and self-recognition of my achievements and TALENT!"

"For the first time in a long while I felt part of a group of like-minded people, which brought great motivation."

"I completely enjoyed the whole experience. Meeting people, having the space and time to develop, bond with new people and to be stretched in tasks & activities."
